Workshop “Shiva Sutras” – Overview

Workshop “Shiva Sutras”

About the middle of the 9th century Vasugupta had a dream in which he was directed to a large boulder on which the 79 Śivasūtras had been engraved by Lord Shiva Himself.  Although scripture, they stood apart from the Śaiva Āgamas as the initial extraction of their secret essence (rahasyopaniṣad). They were followed by a commentary called the Spandakārikās. These along with their commentaries constitute the Spanda school of Kashmiri Shaivism. In the course of the three seminars, we will travel through the vast and rich world of the sūtras guided by Kṣemarāja, Bhāskara and Swami Lakshmanjoo. We will begin by understanding that consciousness is the Self – caitanyam ātmā and that the planes of Yoga that lead to that recognition are wonder – vismayo yogabhumikāḥ (1.12), illumed by the realisation that all that is objective and perceptible is the body of Lord Shiva – dṛ.śyaṃ śarīram (1.14) . In this way the yogi attains mastery of the wheel of energies by the arising of Pure Knowledge – śuddhavidyodayāc cakreśatvasiddhiḥ (1.22). This is the  knowledge innately inherent in one’s own nature. When that arises (that is) Śiva’s state – (the seal) of the one who wanders in the Sky of Consciousness vidyāsamutthāne svābhāvike khecarī śivāvasthā (2.5). To achieve that the Master is the means – gurur upāyaḥ. We are cannot Fly as liberated Siddhas do because we are enveloped by Māyā and so do not have a correct discernment of the true nature of the lower realities kalādīnāṃ tattvānām aviveko māyā (3.3) The yogi, however, who does attain perfection by means of this obscuring veil of delusion mohāvaraṇāt siddhiḥ (3.6)
