Vātūlanāthasūtra

Trident3We are pleased to present Dr. Mark Dyczkowski’s exposition of the Vātūlanāthasūtra, the “Sūtra of the Mad Siddha“, including the commentary by Anantaśaktipāda.

This course consists of six lectures which were recorded in Montreal, Canada, in September 2019. Additionally, Mark Dyczkowski’s complete English translation of the sūtras as well as Anantaśaktipāda’s commentary is provided in PDF format.

As Mark Dyzckowski explains in his introduction:

“The Vātulanāthasūtras belong to the Kashmiri Krama tradition. The commentator presents them, no doubt, as the tradition was in his day, as the oral teachings of Yoginīs. There is no way to fix a date either for the sūtras or the commentator Anantaśaktipāda. But there is no reason to doubt, as Anantaśakti affirms, that the text belongs to a Krama tradition that descends from Niskriyānandanātha, a founder figure who belonged to the earliest phase of the development of an independent Krama school. Normally he appears in these sources as the founder, here instead we are told that he learnt from a certain Gandhamadana. Although they are Krama teachings, the sūtras are unusual. Indeed, some are unique, at least as far as the surviving texts allow us to judge. The terminology is also distinctive. A striking example is the key term Mahāsāhasa. […] The acme of practice taught here is centered on the operation of what is called Mahāsāhasa — the Great Audacity. This is a sudden extremely powerful irruption of expanding consuming pure consciousness.”
